James Moffett, composer

Niagara-based composer James Moffett studied Voice Performance and Composition at the University of Toronto. A great portion of his compositions are for voice, including numerous choral works, written for such choirs as the Toronto Mendelssohn Youth Choir, Chorus Niagara, and Mississauga Festival Choir. Notable works include Orchestral Suite #1, selections of which were performed on several occasions by the Durham Chamber Orchestra and the Ontario Pops Orchestra; Three pieces from Robert Louis Stevenson’s A Child’s Garden of Verses written for the Chorus Niagara Children’s Choir; Dandelions, a one-act comic chamber opera based on a short story by O. Henry; and his Cello Sonata premiered by NSO principal cellist Gordon Cleland.

Recent highlights included a concert of all James Music World Premeieres on April 6.

My Philosophy

Every Canadian classical performer should perform new Canadian Music. If you like mine, I would love for you to perform it.

I write tonal, melodic music in the classical style, for traditional classical instruments and voices, intended for live performance.

When possible, I create audio previews of my music, generated by computer versions of the real instruments. These are just so people can get an idea of what the music should sound like: all of my music has notes written out for real live performers to read.
